What is the FTP Server option in the settings and share tab?

FTP stands for "File Transfer Protocol" and it is a method for uploading and download files from a server. ScreenDASH! offers the ability for someone that has their own server to upload their captured files there for sharing purposes rather than to the Screendash.com website.

If you have a server or a website hosting account and wish to use it as an online storage area for your images, you should contact your server administrator or hosting provider for the relevant information for setting up that option.

The required information includes:

  • Server Address (eg. www.your-server.com)
  • Path for storing files (eg. /directory-for-files)
  • Username
  • Password

Once you've obtained the information, go into the "Preferences" & "Settings" menu to configure the FTP uploading capabilities.

Note: the server address and path must be entered into the "Server" textbox in the FTP settings dialog in the software as a single line. Using the example above, you would enter:
www.your-server.com/directory-for-files

What does "Flatten Image" mean?

During the process of enhancing images with drawings, clip-art, text and other things, you create a number of layers that can be moved, modified, deleted or resized independently at any time. Flattening the image means that you are identifying that the items you've added to the image are "final" and that you are incorporating them permanently into the image. Images must be flattened before they can be resized, saved, printed or shared and some functions, like many of the items in the Tweak menu, will only affect parts of the image that have been flattened.

What does "Crop Image" mean?

Cropping an image refers to selecting an area of the image that is smaller than its overall size and discarding everything outside of that area. You might crop a picture down to just focus on a single person, for example.

Can I start ScreenDASH! automatically when my computer starts up?

You can tell ScreenDASH! to start when you start your computer by enabling a configuration option. Go into the "Preferences" menu, click on "Settings", choose the "Options" tab, put a checkmark in the "Start ScreenDASH! when Windows starts" option and then click on "Apply". ScreenDASH! will start automatically the next time you log onto Windows.

Can I start ScreenDASH! in the background?

Yes, you can start ScreenDASH! and have it only appear in your Windows system taskbar rather than opening the full program window. Go into the "Preferences" menu, click on "Settings", choose the "Options" tab, put a checkmark in the "Start minimized" option and then click on "Apply". ScreenDASH! will start without bringing up its main program window the next time you run it.

Note: If you are running the software in trial or free mode, you will still be presented with the "Activation Screen" even when ScreenDASH! is set to start minimized.

What does the "Threshold" option in the Tweak menu do?

The threshold tool can create some interesting artistic effects by decreasing the amount of detail in an image by making areas of similar colors a single uniform color based on their most prevalent color. For example, an area of brown might become an block of red color if the brown is made up of a lot of reds. Threshold often works best with greyscale image where it creates an image where everything is either black or white - no shades of gray in between; any areas that are 50% black are more are black and anything 50% black or less are white.

What does the "Saturation Change" option in the Tweak menu do?

The saturation tool changes the intensity of the colors in the image. By increasing the saturation, the colors will become more vibrant. Decrease the saturation and they will become less vibrant and more like a greyscale image.

I have my own server, can I post the images there directly?

Yes, you can post images directly to your server via FTP. You can configure your FTP upload settings by going into the "Preferences" menu and then into "Settings". In the "Server" tab, enable the "FTP Server" option and provide it with your FTP server information.

The required information includes:

  • Server Address (eg. www.your-server.com)
  • Path for storing files (eg. /directory-for-files)

How do I enable custom ads so I can obtain Google AdSense revenue?

If you have your own Google AdSense account, you can earn money by sharing your images online via the Screendash.com website! If you don't have a Google AdSense account, you can get one by signing up for free at Google's AdSense website.

There are two numbers associated to your Google AdSense account that you'll need to set this up. These include your Publisher ID (known as "Pub ID" in ScreenDASH!) and your ad slot number. Here's how to obtain them:

  • Log into Google AdSense.

  • Go into the "AdSense Setup" tab and click on "AdSense for Content"

  • Click on "Single Page" just below the "AdSense for Content" title and then next to "Ad Unit", choose the type(s) of ads that you'd like to appear on your screendash.com image pages. Text ads, image ads, or a combination of both.

  • Under "Format", choose the "728x90 Leaderboard" option (this is the only size supported by ScreenDASH!). You may adjust other options such as the color of the ad, etc. if you wish and then click "Submit & Get Code" at the bottom of the page.

  • In the block of text you are provided on the next page, there are a few pieces of information you'll need in order to setup ad support in ScreenDASH. First, you'll notice a line labelled google_ad_client. Your "Pub ID" in shown to the right of this item in quotation marks and it begins with "pub-". When entering this number into ScreenDASH's ad settings you should include only the numbers that appear after the "pub-" prefix.

The other number you'll need to make note of is the number in quotations next to google_ad_slot. Once you've obtained your Pub ID and Ad Slot number, go into ScreenDASH!, into the "Preferences" menu and into "Settings". On the "Server" tab, check the "Custom ads". Enter your Pub ID and Ad Slot number into the textboxes provided (note: enter only the numbers, no text or quotation marks) and then click on "Apply".

The next time you share an image via the "Screendash" sharing option, your Google AdSense ad will be displayed on the page along with the image.

Troubleshooting

Why is the Tweak tool I'm using not working? (eg. Saturation change, hue change, threshold, contrast, brightness, etc.)

The tool may not appear to be working because it can only be applied to images that have been flattened. If you've added clip-art, text or drawings to your image and wish to have the tweak tool affect those items, make sure to flatten the image first.

ScreenDASH's email sharing function works by attaching your image to a new email using your default email program. If you don't have an email program installed on your computer, you may wish to set one up, or you can use the "Screendash" icon in the share tab and simply email a link to the image via your webmail account, IM, Facebook message, etc.

If you would like to setup an email program, you may wish to check out some of the more popular email packages such as Microsoft's Outlook Express or Mozilla's Thunderbird. Note: Our support staff are not able to help with the configuration of email programs.
